Why We Follow the Primal Eating Plan
We are champions of a healthy lifestyle. Do we believe that Primal is the only way to be healthy? No, but we do believe that Primal is the BEST way. We eat primal for health and fitness.
The Primal lifestyle is a very healthy and sustainable way to eat. In addition, based on our knowledge, experience, empirical data, and observation we agree with the basic principles of the primal way of eating.
These facts were very important to us, because we didn’t want another fad diet or something that would give short term gains, but put our long term health at risk. We were also drawn to the Primal lifestyle because we saw the results first hand. Our niece and nephew, who first introduced us to the concepts, looked great and talked about how much better they looked and felt.
Once we decided to adopt the primal lifestyle, we jumped in with both feet. We learned the basics on Saturday, on Sunday morning we read Mark’s Daily Apple and the Paleo Principle (during a 7 hour car ride), Sunday evening we went grocery shopping, and started eating the primal way on Monday. We haven’t looked back since.
What is Eating Primal?
Eating primal is not a diet – it is a lifestyle – a way of eating that emphasizes health AND fitness. In summary going primal means that: you choose to eat foods the way our bodies are genetically designed to eat, prior to any modern day agriculture. Eat foods that can be grown, hunted, and gathered. Eating this way provides the most nutrient dense foods that are the best for fueling and healing our bodies.
It means staying away from foods that are just empty calories that harm our bodies like grains containing gluten, sugar, refined and processed foods.
In practice, we prioritize eating in this order: protein, vegetables, fats, nuts & seeds, fruit, and dairy. We choose clean, organic (where it makes sense) options and take care to avoid artificial foods and chemicals wherever possible.
Quick note on dairy. Some people consider dairy on the fringe of primal; we’ve chosen to include it in our lifestyle. We eat to be healthy and fit, not skinny.
When we eat we focus on quality sources of protein (all forms of meat, fowl, fish), lots of colorful vegetables, some select fruits (mostly berries), and healthy fats (nuts, avocados, olive oil). We also observe portion control (calorie distribution) week to week more than meal to meal. And finally, we have eliminated grains, sugars, trans- and hydrogenated fats from our diet.
For many people this sounds too restrictive; but when we put into practice, we discovered a whole new way of eating. We also uncovered a new appreciation for a variety of great foods.
When we first started we did 4 things:
- Committed to the Primal lifestyle
- Purged our pantry and refrigerator of foods we knew for a fact weren’t primal or clean
- Went grocery shopping
- Made a day 1 and week 1 eating plan.
To help make it easier for you, we’re going to walk you through these steps, if you’re ready to get started.
