Our Story

Our Story:  Love & Primal

People often ask how we have made the physical transformation. Most people think we just exercised it off, taking and teaching fitness classes. Did you know you can gain weight working out hard 4-5 days a week? It’s not that difficult…we proved it.

Boy Meets Girl

We met at the gym…specifically cycle class. Both of us were in pretty good shape at the time. We talked, dated, developed a deep and abiding love, and got married on September 10, 2011 (9-10-11, cute, eh.)

Boy and Girl Get Fat (eating, drinking, and being merry)

We were in the gym 5-6 days a week. We cycled and lifted weights. We got fat. The main reason? When we left the gym we headed to Walmart, purchased a loaf of french bread, meatballs, shredded cheese, and steak fries (if it was a Friday, the list included a 12 pack of Miller Lite). We calculated the calories in a few of our meals back then and they often topped 2000 calories! While grocery shopping may have been fiscally responsible, it was playing havoc on our health.

We had a routine…Sundays: pepperoni subs, Mondays: Papa Johns ($10 special), Tuesdays: meatball subs, Wednesdays: frozen chicken pasta dish, Thursdays: Buffalo chicken salad, Fridays: TGI Fridays, Saturdays: Thai…craziness! Breakfast was typically a bagel and lunch a sandwich, chips, and granola bar. Vegetables were an after thought, beer a before thought.

This was us in the summer of 2011 and 6 months later…you can literally see our love growing. At this point keep in mind were were working out hard 5-6 days a week.

Summer 2011

December 2011

While on the surface we were enjoying ourselves; we silently grieved our weight gain. Our families expressed concern, clothes were tight and getting tighter, and the weight was not only affecting us physically, but emotionally as well. We knew we had to make a change.

Boy and Girl Start Losing Weight

We gave ourselves a start date, made a grocery list, cleaned out our pantry, and made a commitment to not start a diet, but adopt a new lifestyle. Most importantly we made this commitment individually and to each other. We made a commitment to support and love each other through the lifelong journey.

We changed our diet, added more weight training and intensified our cardio. We committed to eating Primal.

Boy and Girl Finding Fitness

What are the physical results of the changes we made?

  • Leonard lost 51 lbs. Waist dropped from 42″ to 31″
  • Sarah lost 80 lbs. Clothing size dropped from size 14-16 to size 2-4.

Boy and Girl Today

As of this post, we’ve lost over 150 lbs. and gained a deeper appreciation, love, and respect for each other. We are stronger physically, emotionally, and spiritually as individuals and as husband and wife. The measurables are great and provide a clear sense of accomplishment; the immeasurables are the real treasures that provide the foundation for our life’s journey together.

Now we are dedicated to helping others discover what we have found…and share in the journey.

The questions we are asked the most are:

What do you eat?

Basically we follow the basic Primal diet (which is slightly different from Paleo) pretty closely. What we eat is pretty straight forward and prioritized in this order:

  1. Clean proteins. Mostly chicken, fish, some beef, little pork. (We also use a whey protein supplement)
  2. Vegetables. Favorites include broccoli, spinach, spaghetti squash, cauliflower, and green beans
  3. Nuts, seeds, and good fats. Almonds, pine nuts, etc. We cook with Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, and butter
  4. Some fruit. Usually apples, oranges, and berries
  5. Some dairy. Cheeses, yogurt, and almond milk
  6. No starch, no white or wheat flour, no sugar.

We eat 6-8 times a day and drink 1/2 to a gallon of water a day.  We also use several supplements that we believe have been beneficial in our journey.

The best resources for the primal diet and the science behind it are The Primal Blueprint and The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet. You can purchase both of these books here.

You can view a typical day of what we eat here.

What are your workouts?

We LOVE working out and pushing ourselves. Our workouts by design are varied, challenging, and incorporate cardio and strength conditioning. You can see exactly what our daily workouts are at cyclecrossfitness.com. Both of us work full time and spend about 9 hours a week (6 days) working out. Sundays are days we completely rest and prepare for the upcoming week.

Here is a typical workout week for us:

Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
AM REST Cardio/Strength Cardio/Core Cardio/Strength Cardio/Core Light Cardio Cardio/Strength
PM REST Cardio Cardio REST Cardio REST REST

Our cardio consists of intense cycle (spinning), running and sometimes both. Our strength conditioning is similar in principal to CrossFit; but, geared toward a group exercise setting. We lift heavy/traditional once a week.
